Meet our Staff: Christina Hugill

Read our interview with Christina Hugill, Managing Consultant at BMT Hi-Q Sigma. Christina has recently completed a three month secondment in Canada.

How has your career progressed since you joined BMT Hi-Q Sigma?

I joined the company as a Graduate in September 2009 and I am now a Managing Consultant. When I joined  I knew that I didn’t want to specialise until I had sampled working in all of our capabilities and the company completely supported this aspiration. Since then I have completed a variety of roles and gained experience in Programme and Project Controls, Enterprise Risk Management, Systems Engineering and Enterprise Architecture. Five years on and I still haven’t specialised but I thoroughly enjoy working across the capabilities and the variety keeps me motivated. Furthermore I don’t think I have been in one role where I didn’t use a mixture of the skills acquired.

With BMT Hi-Q Sigma operating across various sectors, I got the opportunity to do a three month secondment in Canada, supporting a major organisational change programme for the Department of National Defence. My secondment has just finished and it has been a challenging yet rewarding experience.

What training and development opportunities have you had since joining the company?

Training and development opportunities have been plentiful and varied, from internal courses in risk management and leadership to formal certified training in MSP and TOGAF. I have a company mentor (and several informal mentors too) and have received on-the-job training from my fellow Hi-Q Sigma colleagues, all of which has been massively beneficial. Professional development is also actively encouraged and I have recently increased my involvement with professional bodies such as INCOSE and I am an ambassador for STEM. The company holds a review every quarter where we take a day out to meet up with colleagues and this is a great opportunity to share experiences and transfer knowledge.

How would you describe the company culture?

The company culture is very friendly and relaxed. I feel empowered to make decisions on how to best approach and solve my client’s requirements but also know I have managerial oversight and knowledge reach-back available should I need it. Although the company has tripled in size since I joined, it still has that ‘small company’ feel to it and we all get the opportunity to contribute to how the company will shape in the future.

What is the best thing about working for Hi-Q Sigma?

The best thing about working at Hi-Q Sigma is the people. I know that no matter if I am consulting in Lichfield or 3000+ miles away in Ottawa, I can pick up the phone to a colleague from Graduate to Director and they will be happy to help me out. A close second is the company summer ball and Christmas party!
