The Implications of the SDSR

Shortly after taking office in May 2010 the Coalition Government announced its commitment to undertake the Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR). The SDSR covers a broader scope than the previous Strategic Defence Review conducted in 1998, in that it is cross departmental and overseen by the newly formed National Security Council, chaired by the Prime Minister. In advance of the publication, the Government gave an indication of the likely themes and priorities for the SDSR which were reinforced in the National Security Strategy published this week. Additionally, in their published "Programme for Government " the Coalition Government confirmed the proposal to reduce the Ministry of Defence's (MOD's) running costs by at least 25%.
